Septic Guidelines: Caring for the Lakehouse

Updated: Sep 21
Looking after the little things that quietly look after all of us.
One of the joys of staying at Lilac Lakehouse is being surrounded by nature.
The calm waters of Cressy Cove, the open countryside, the fresh County air, and the peaceful landscape all play a part in making this place feel so wonderfully different from everyday life. Looking after that environment is something we care deeply about, and with just a few small considerations, our guests help us do the same.

Like many rural homes throughout Prince Edward County, the Lakehouse operates on a private septic system. It's designed to quietly do its job in the background, asking very little in return, but it does appreciate a little kindness.
The good news is that caring for it is wonderfully simple.
When using the toilets, please flush only toilet paper and human waste. Even products labelled "flushable," such as wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, or facial tissues, can cause unnecessary problems for septic systems and should always be placed in the garbage instead.
In the kitchen, we kindly ask that you avoid pouring grease, cooking oils, fats, starches (such as rice or pasta), or food scraps down the sink. These items can build up over time and affect both the plumbing and the septic system. A quick scrape into the compost or garbage goes a long way.
One of the wonderful things about the Lakehouse is that water isn't something you need to ration. Enjoy a long shower after a day exploring the County, relax in a deep bath, or simply settle in without worrying about strict water limits. We only ask that you use water thoughtfully, just as you would in any home that shares its surroundings with nature.
You'll also notice that only certain taps throughout the Lakehouse are labelled as potable drinking water. These taps provide filtered drinking water for you to enjoy. If you prefer, you're also welcome to use the water dispenser, and we've provided the first jug as our welcome to you.
These are all small things individually, but together they help us care for a home that has brought so many families together over the years.
After all, the best way to preserve a special place is for everyone to leave it just as welcoming for the next guests as it was for them.
